POSITION PURPOSE:This position is responsible for the coordination of internal and external orders as they relate to the Indiana Historical Society’s (IHS) visual collections. Incumbent is expected to conduct regular research and reference assistance, especially as it pertains to the visual collections. This position is also responsible for performing a number of the essential activities comprising the entire cycle of collections and library management, especially focusing on the use of archival and library collections.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Coordinate photographic reproduction orders, consult with library patrons, and supervise work flow to fulfill orders.
  2. Provide advanced and basic research and referral service, offering well-organized, accurate, and clear responses to visual reference inquiries.
  3. Assist with general IHS reference work.
  4. Work on various special projects as they are initiated.
  5. Provide images from visual collections to the IHS Press and other departments for publication or display.
  6. Participate in workshops and presentations that highlight various pieces of the IHS visual collection.
  7. Assist with the selection of images to be placed in the IHS online digital collections.
  8. Participate in relevant committees.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  1. Working knowledge of reference services and digital image practices as they relate to historical research libraries.
  2. Excellent computer skills; proficient with Microsoft Office suite as well as basic office equipment.
  3. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for diverse audiences.
  4. Team player with the ability to manage, lead, motivate, and delegate.
  5. General knowledge of standard cataloging practices and principles under Library of Congress Classification System.
  6. Ability to provide information in a clear and concise manner.
  7. Commitment to excellent customer service, both internally and externally.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in History, American Studies, Library Studies, or related field. 2 years experience in a library or archives setting.PREFERRED: Master’s degree in Library and Information Science, History, or related field. Previous experience in a museum or library setting. Experience working with historical collections, including photographs and other graphic materials.  Experience in fulfilling patron requests for digital image reproductions. Working knowledge of database management.
