PRIMARY FUNCTION(S): The Visual Resources Librarian, embedded within the Department of Art, coordinates the creation, management, and use of Visual Resources for art history and studio art instruction at Lafayette College, as well as for faculty and students from other academic departments. Manages digital imaging lab within the Department of Art. Participates in the Library’s instruction program, serving as campus lead for visual literacy education. Contributes to the development of disciplinary image collections to support the curriculum, including image production, using and displaying digital assets, and consultation on best practices for daily use of digital resources. Trains and manages student assistants.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Directs on-site image production workflow, including pre-production organization and preparation of analog materials to be digitized. Prepares and manages order-specific workflows for procurement and/or capture. Recommends enhancements to policy and workflows. Contributes to database administration, quality control, and entry of administrative, descriptive, and technical metadata. Performs and supervises all aspects of digital image production, including: scanning, digital photography, color management, editing, cleaning, cataloging, and repurposing. Provides on-call faculty support for art instruction classrooms, including: creation and presentation of visual lectures, retrieval of desired image content, installation of specialized software, and repurposing of digital image content to desired end-use specifications. Administers and assists with computer lab in the Visual Resources Center and proctors faculty-prepared examinations. Tests and installs imaging technologies for learning and research.
Leads instruction sessions for faculty and students on visual literacy and its underlying concepts, including how to analyze visual materials and create relevant, consistent metadata. Develops new workshops and instruction programs based on faculty and student need.
Consults with faculty concerning image acquisitions and accessions image orders for inclusion in the Lafayette College Visual Resources Collection (ARTstor Shared Shelf), the College’s digital repository (Islandora), and project-specific databases. Researches pre-existing digital content available for subscription or purchase. Suggests and manages improvements to procedural workflow for content updates to the Department of Art web page and ensures review of the accuracy of course information.
Trains and manages undergraduate student assistants in tasks related to image production, image cataloging, and technical assistance for classroom presentations and general hardware/software support.
This position is a part of Skillman Library’s Digital Scholarship Services department. Attends monthly Library and Department of Art meetings. Participates in cross-team projects and performs other duties as required. Maintains professional skills by attending conferences, workshops and trade shows.
Education/Experience: Master’s degree in library and information science, plus two years relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills: Excellent communication, organization, interpersonal, and teaching abilities. Strong background in digital imaging and computer troubleshooting skills with competence in both Microsoft Windows and Mac OS environments. Able to teach visual literacy concepts. Experience with principles of color-managed workflows, digital copy photography, and reflective and transmissive scanning techniques, and batch editing techniques. Expert skill in use of common image manipulation and presentation software. Experience with relational database software, data entry, and reporting. Expertise with digital library resources such as ARTstor, SharedShelf, Islandora/Fedora, and Microsoft Access required. Reading knowledge of one additional foreign language desired.
