Glenstone Digital Projects Intern

Glenstone is a place that seamlessly integrates art, architecture, and landscape into a serene and contemplative environment to form a unique connection between art and visitor. It expresses the personal vision of its founders by assembling and presenting post–World War II art of the highest quality in a series of refined architectural and outdoor spaces. These settings exist to exhibit works of art—created from 1945 through the lifetime of Glenstone’s founders—that represent the greatest historical shifts in how art is seen and experienced.

Glenstone is located in Potomac, Maryland, outside the nation’s capital. Glenstone has embarked on a major expansion over the next few years with the construction of a new exhibition facility that will present the extensive collection of the founders and further their mission.

Glenstone offers internship experiences to prepare Masters of Library, Archives and Information Science students (MLS) for careers in museum libraries and archives in the 21st century.

The Digital Projects internship provides the opportunity for MLS students to work in support of the Glenstone Registrar and Library and Archives staff with digitization initiatives, used to increase access to collections through new media through the creation of electronic surrogates, while gaining practical field experience in a Museum Library and Archives setting.

Interns must schedule their work Monday through Friday during regular business hours. The Digital Projects Intern will work under the supervision of the Registrar and guidance of the Assistant Archivist.

The Digital Projects Intern will be responsible for scanning registrar files in support of the museum staff, to include following best practices for digital imaging, file-naming, file migration, processing archival records, archival storage of electronic files, and other activities as assigned.

Major duties include scanning records and images with a flatbed scanner and a sheet-fed scanner; exercising quality control over digital files, including adjusting scans for contrast, sharpness, and/or color fidelity; naming digital files in accord with the registrar’s file-naming conventions; separating and organizing scanned files; entering and editing metadata;  preparing technical and administrative documentation; and performing re-processing of paper and digital files, as well as other duties as assigned.

The preferred candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • MLS Graduate student in archives, records management and/ or information management with a demonstrated interest in digital imaging and visual arts and art history
  • Knowledge of digitization standards and best practices and with procedures and guidelines regarding proper archival document handling
  • Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Strong computer skills and software knowledge; Proficient in Microsoft Office and in using Adobe Proficiency in using Photoshop for basic photograph editing
    • Facility with visual acuity and with exercising quality control over files, including adjusting scans for contrast, sharpness, and/or color fidelity
    • Ability to self-direct tasks and ability to work under pressure and meet aggressive deadlines
    • Ability to set up, calibrate, and trouble-shoot scanning equipment
    • Knowledge of basic metadata development
    • Strong service orientation and interpersonal skills
